Unpackingonboardthevessel
Whenyouareworkingonboardavessel,an“approvedconductiveservicemat”is
oftenfaraway.Asyoustillneedtounpackcircuitboards,makesurethatyoudoit
intheinstrumentroom,oratanotherlocationwhereyouhaveasteeldeck.Keepfar
awayfromthebridgeoranyotherroomswithwall-to-wallcarpets!Ifpossible,bringa
wristbandandgroundyourself.
Returningacircuitboard
Ifyouwishtoreturnacircuitboardtous,observethefollowingrules.
Note
Failuretofollowtheserulesmayresultinunserviceablecircuitboards.
1Placethecircuitboardtobereturnedinthesameprotectiveplasticbagasyou
originallyreceiveditin-oraprotectivebagofsimilarESDprotectionquality.

itinsidethebag.

5Placethecircuitboardinasuitablecarton,andsecureitforshipping.
Electro-StaticDischarge(ESD)
WhatisESD?
Electro-StaticDischarge(ESD)isthetransferofanelectrostaticchargebetweentwo
bodiesatdifferentelectrostaticlevels,causedeitherbydirectcontactorinductionby
anelectrostaticeld.Thepassingofachargethroughanelectronicdevicecancause
localisedoverheating,anditcanalso“puncture”insulatinglayerswithinthestructureof
thedevice.Thismaydepositaconductiveresidueofthevaporisedmetalonthedevice,
andthuscreateashortcircuit.Thismayresultinacatastrophicfailure,ordegraded
performanceofthedevice.
ESDprotection
Sensitiveelectroniccircuitboardsmustbetransportedandstoredinprotectivepacking
bags.Thecircuitboardsmustnotbetransportedorstoredclosetostrongelectrostatic,
electro-magneticorradioactiveelds.
Ifitisnecessarytoopenandtouchthecircuitboardinsidetheprotectivebag,then
thefollowingprecautionsmustbetaken:
